The film is is a very close adaptation of Frank Miller's award winning graphic novel, highlighting the epic ancient battle of Thermopylae, where three hundred Spartans took on the might of the Persian army, from the perspective of Leonidas I, King of Sparta.

Miller himself was inspired by the 1960's film "The Three Hundred Spartans" and his graphic novel, written and illustrated by him, is very similar in style to his "Sin City" graphic novel.

The film is directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, Bernie Goldman and Jeffrey Silver.
