Batman began life in May 1939 in Detective Comics#27.
He was the creation of artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, who came up with the idea
in response to the great success of Action Comics' Superman.
Unusually for a superhero, Batman has no superpowers, but uses
supreme agility, strength and intelect and of course gadgets
to catch the villain.
By day he lives the life of billionaire industrialist Bruce wayne
and by night is transformed into the Batman to fight crime in
the streets of Gotham City.
Within a year of Batman's creation it was decided that he needed a sidekick
and so Robin was born (Detective Comics#38).
Officially Batman stands at 6'2" - the height of both Adam west and Christian Bale.
Batman has teamed up with Superman several times over the years and their first
joint story line was in the first series of Superman#76 in 1952.
It was editor Julius Schwartz who in 1964 came up with major style changes including the yellow ellipse behind batman's
bat logo.
In 1998 Gotham was completely destroyed in the 'Cataclysm' storyline.
There have been a number of 'Robins' - the first one being Dick Grayson, who
later became Nightwing.
The Batmobile from the 1966 television series was built from a Lincoln Futura concept car.
Barbara Gordon, daughter of Commissioner Gordon was for a time Batman's female sidekick - Batgirl.
