The New York Daily News has reported that Captain America has been killed off in the current issue of his own comic book.

A victim of the storyline "Civil War" which has been written to mirror the current threat of terrorism, he is shot by a sniper outside the courthouse.

This ends a long run for the USA's most patriotic superhero who was created By Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1941.

Over 200 million copies of Captain America comic books have been published by Marvel in 75 countries.

Fans shouldn't be too concerned about his death, as in the comic book world, death is never final and with a Captain America movie in the pipeline, and an unused suit just lying around, who knows how long the 'Cap' will remain deceased.
