Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston and his wife Elizabeth (Sadie) Holloway Marston,.
She first appeared in All Star Comics #8 (Dec. 1941).
In response to the number of male superheroes at the time,
Marston created his female superhero to serve as a role model for girls.
Within six months she had her own comic book title.
She was originally described on each cover as "beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena,
swifter than Mercury, and stronger than Hercules."
Wonder Woman's "magic lasso" was forged from the Magic Girdle of Aphrodite. It was unbreakable and infinitely stretchable, and forced anyone held by it to tell the truth.
She had to win an Amazonian tournament in order to be allowed to travel to the modern world and become Wonder Woman.
She hides her true identity under the guise of nurse Diana Prince.
Wonder Woman's love interest was Steve Trevor, who she nursed back to health after his plane crash-landed on her island.
She differed from the majority of super heroes in that she wanted to reform the criminals she captured
and so rehabilitation for them was set up on 'Transformation Island'.
Her tiara was an unbreakable boomerang
In the late 1960s, Wonder Woman gave up her powers in order to stay in "Man's World" and be with Steve Trevor.
Her powers weren't restored until issue #204 in 1973.
The 1970's TV series starring Linda Carter was originally set in the 1940's but later changed to its contemporary
setting of the 1970's.
In the comic books, Steve Trevor has been killed twice (and is still alive!).
In 1982 the eagle on Wonder Woman's bodice was replaced with a stylised 'W' so that it could be copywrited.
